Characteristics Blogs and Wikis in Language Teaching

Imagine the next scene. We are looking for information on the internet about any topic. We come to a web page where there is a collection of commented links about that topic: an authentic mine. But how is it possible that page X includes one of the best references on the subject at the global level? We invite you to continue accessing our page for more information that we present below.

In the new educational paradigm it is necessary to "learn to learn", since the training does not stick to a certain space and time, but requires a certain capacity for learning throughout life.
In the first post we covered the importance of using social media, blogs and wikis, in classroom. Now, we are going to mention some features that good blogs and wikis possess to implement in language classes.

In the case of wikis, they can provide an efficient, flexible, user friendly and cost-effective interface for collaboration, knowledge creation and archiving, and student interaction.

It is important to consider those factors before applying wikis for teaching. The information in wikis must be useful for the students. On the other hand, a blog is characterized by the following traits:

 • A frequently updated web site with entries listed in reverse-chronological order (so that the most recent is at the top of the page).
• Written from a personal viewpoint, often in the first-person, with a personalized interface.
• Social, offering visitors the ability to comment and containing links to blogs and sites on similar topics.
As we mentioned in the previous post, children and teenagers are digital natives. If they have the ability to use technology, teachers could adapt those types of tools in second language learning.  The availability and accessibility to anyone with access to the internet and internet email address give the chance to create a personal web space, using as a journal or recording important information from the class.

There are a number of possible ways to display, organize and use blogs in the ESL/EFL classroom. More specifically, there are the blog (Campbell). The first offers daily reading practice for the students since the administrator can select links or articles to inspire students to further research class related topics. In addition to this, the page can also serve to remind students of syllabus related issues and homework assignments.

The collaborative access that blogs and wikis present can help students when they make mistakes or clarify ideas. The section of comments let the author to know what other people think about the topic or other information that the web site has.

In conclusion the characteristics of them make of this tool an instrument of great value for its educational use within a constructivist model. The blogs and wikis support E-learning, establish an informal communication channel between teacher and student, promote social interaction, provide the student with a personal means for experimenting with their own learning and, finally, are easy to learn. Based on some previous knowledge of digital technology.

  1. Hello Detney and Gloudis. We think that even though wikis and blogs are not a very reliable source of information, they are a good way to storage information. Using these technological tools in the classroom will help students feel more confident as the new generations know how to control technogy. We would also like to add, that a good wiki and a good blog must be not only attractive, but neat and easy to read and understand.

  5. Hi girls. Thank you so much for the information you have made about these resources. It is interesting that we can use them to teach the second language learning. We agree with you when it says that are easy to learn how to use them. We are in an age where almost everybody knows about how to use technology. There wouldn't be a problem if we apply these tools in our classrooms.
